About the Book

Published by A-R Editions in May 2026

The Beethoven GPS is a historical survey and descriptive bibliography of music publications from Beethoven’s time to the present. Initiated as an update to William S. Newman’s “Chronological Checklist of Collected Editions of Beethoven’s Solo Piano Sonatas Since His Own Day,” published in Notes in 1977, the BGPS developed into a hybrid reference book intended for pianists and piano teachers as well as music catalogers and Beethoven researchers.

The first part of each entry documents the publication history of the collected edition through catalogs, publisher advertisements, and reviews. The second part of each entry summarizes the salient features of each edition, including additions of phrasing, tempos, fingerings, pedaling, realization of ornaments, annotations on interpretation, formal analysis, and similar.
